First used as an aid in therapy for its qualities of having a relatively short duration, generally more manageable effects, and low incidence of side effects. It soon became popular as a recreational drug, and has been sold as and confused with MDMA. Although their effects are distinct, both are inhibitors of the serotonin transporter.
